Celebrating the Park's Re-restoration!
Previously reported here in October of 2024, West Granite Creek Park was under threat by a City plan to install a paved parking lot between the railroad trestle bridge and Miller Creek! Since then much has happened to protect the park.
In March and April of 2026 alone, community volunteers invested almost 400 hours working together with City staff to improve soils, plant initial vegetation, build trails and fences, monitor and maintain the project, as well as engaging and educating the community about the project – AGAIN
“AGAIN” in that current efforts are actually a “re-restoration” of the area. The Park area was restored in an effort supported by the City of Prescott and paid for by Arizona Public Service Company (APS) over 25 years ago!
In 2000, the City of Prescott made a long-term investment in the area with approval of the Master Plan for West Granite Creek Park which states the following objectives:
- “To return the confluence of Miller and Granite Creek (West Granite Creek Park) to an ideal riparian setting with limited park improvements.”
- “To establish educational and limited recreational (i.e. trail-related) passive use opportunities, with connections to neighborhoods, businesses, parks, schools, and other Prescott greenways.”
Benefits of West Granite Creek Park as listed in the plan include:
- The area will be ecologically restored
- Reduced resource degradation (cleaner creeks and thriving wildlife and vegetation)
- Opportunity for escape and solitude
- Environmental benefits, visual benefits, and educational and passive recreation benefits are listed
With temperatures rising and the seasonal opening of the adjacent splash pad, there are diverse voices for how the park should be managed.
Prescott Creeks respectfully encourages the City of Prescott to continue its support of previous decisions to operate West Granite Creek Park in a manner consistent with the 2000 Master Plan for West Granite Creek Park objectives and to find other locations for a parking lot that are outside of West Granite Creek Park (and outside of sensitive riparian areas). Further, Prescott Creeks encourages the City to support the renewed ecological “re-restoration” effort that also provides for long-term protection and management of the Park.
