Community Unites to Cleanup Its Creeks

When people come together in this community, big things happen. We learned that lesson again on Saturday April 19, when 332 people from all over town spent a beautiful morning pulling trash out of Granite Creek and creeks all over Prescott. More than two and a half tons of junk – tires, plastic bottles, construction debris and more – isn’t in our creeks anymore, thanks to those volunteers and the Prescott businesses that sponsored the 2008 Granite Creek Cleanup.
	It was a huge team effort. Of those volunteers, eight were city workers from the solid waste division, coming in on what normally would be a day off and trucking all the trash collected to the transfer station. Long before the Cleanup, Prescott Creeks got the support it needed to put on the event from sponsors like the Prescott Lakes Parkway Wal-Mart, the City of Prescott, Prescott College, the Sierra Club’s Yavapai Group, Unisource Energy, Starbucks Coffee, Fann Contracting, Waste Management, APS and Whiskey Row Screen Printing.
When it comes to protecting, restoring and celebrating the creeks that flow through our town, this community faces a daunting task. Prescott Creeks is undertaking a big restoration project in Watson Woods starting later this year that will require lots of volunteers to help us plant more than 15,000 trees; people can find out more at our website www.PrescottCreeks.org. Watching people pull together on Saturday makes me confident that – together – this community is up to the challenge.
