Prescott Creeks is proud to announce that Renee Hoover has joined the team. As an AmeriCorps*VISTA member Renee will work with Prescott Creeks for at least the next year to 1)Raise profile of Prescott Creeks in the community, state and region, 2)Coordinate volunteer participation in creek-based projects, and 3)Further develop membership for the organization. The AmeriCorps*VISTA Project of Yavappai County's mission is to help build and sustain the efforts of Yavapai County service providers and community members to continually improve the quality of life across the region. We work to support efforts in creating a just and healthy community.

The project is supported by the Corporation for National and Community Service, provides full-time volunteers to nonprofit, faith-based and other community organizations, and public agencies to create and expand programs that ultimately bring low-income individuals and communities out of poverty. Prescott Creeks appears on CableONE

Prescott Creeks made its first cable TV appearance on Friday June 20th, 2008. Katie Borman, a CableONE TV producer worked with the Prescott Creeks staff to produce this 7-minute piece for their CableONE community show .

MAYOR JACK WILSON TO TOUR WATSON LAKE
STORMWATER PROJECT

22 February 2008

City of Prescott Mayor Jack Wilson, representatives of the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality, and Prescott Creeks staff will review reconstruction underway at the stormwater basin near the intersection of Prescott Lakes Parkway and Sundog Road. This project will protect water quality in Granite Creek & Watson Lake, and bring in more than $200,000 in construction and monitoring work to the community.

Prescott, AZ— Prescott Creeks, a Prescott-based, grassroots non-profit organization has raised $1.4 million from state granting agencies to improve conditions at Watson Woods Riparian Preserve—where Granite Creek is listed as an “impaired” waterbody. Between 2:00 and 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 18, Steve Owens, Director of the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) and Jack Wilson, Mayor-Elect for the City of Prescott, will be guided by Michael Byrd, Executive Director of Prescott Creeks, on a tour of the recently funded projects.

With grant funding from the Arizona Water Protection Fund Commission, the Restoration Plan for Watson Woods Riparian Preseve was completed and released in June 2007. Restoration project goals:

  1. Restore and enhance Granite Creek channel function.
  2. Restore and enhance riparian habitats.
  3. Improve water quality.
  4. Educate & include community members in the restoration process.

American Rivers Names Verde Among America's Most Endangered
Increasing groundwater pumping to feed booming development poses a severe threat to the Verde River, threatening not only one of Arizona’s most popular rivers but also water supplies for downstream communities leading American Rivers to list Upper Verde today as America’s #10 most endangered river for 2006.  The annual America’s Most Endangered Rivers report highlights ten rivers facing a major turning point in the coming year, where action by citizens can make a huge difference for both community well-being and river health. Verde is one of the most endangered rivers in U.S.
The Verde River is among the 10 of America's Most Endangered Rivers in the United States, according to a report that American Rivers released today.

The conservation group puts the Verde at No. 10 on its 2006 list. The Grand Canyon Chapter of the Sierra Club nominated the Verde to the list.
