2nd Annual Run for the Creeks

Join us on August 28th for the 2nd Annual Run for the Creeks! All races start and finish at the Willow Lake boat ramp in Prescott - just off Highway 89 North near the Heritage Park Zoo. Registration begins at 7:00am. The 10K race begins at 8:00am, the 5K Race begins at 8:15am and the Kid Creek Run begins at 9:30am.

Manzanita Outdoor's Kayak Raffle Donation

Prescott Creeks is honored to receive a donation for $652 from Manzanita Outdoor's Kayak Raffle. Manzanita Outdoor has been a continuous supporter of Prescott Creeks' work on the waterways and habitat of our area. The lucky winner of a brand new Old Town Otter XT kayak is Barb Mure of Prescott.

Annual Granite Creek Cleanup Huge Success

Volunteers from this year’s Granite Creek Cleanup removed 3.73 tons of waste from creeks and lakes throughout the Prescott area. The Granite Creek Cleanup is a community event made possible by hundreds of individuals, families, community organizations, school groups, special needs programs and local businesses. This long-standing tradition is a great way to celebrate the beautiful waterways that flow through our town and our deep-rooted community.

The workshop will be held on Wednesday, May 5th, 2010 from 8:45am to 2:30pm at the Yavapai County Cooperative Extension, 840 Rodeo Drive in Prescott, AZ. There is no fee for this workshop.

Granite Creek Cleanup 2010

Cleanup 2010.

Prescott Creeks is proud to announce the 16th annual Granite Creek Cleanup and our fourth year organizing this important Prescott tradition! Please join us Saturday April 24, 2010 as we gather as a community to clean the Granite Creek Watershed of garbage and solid waste. The cleanup begins at 8am at the Granite Creek Park Ramada. Upon arrival you will receive your assigned stretch of creek, maps, garbage bags, gloves and a free 2010 Granite Creek Cleanup T-shirt. There is also complimentary coffee and snacks to rev you up for a morning of hiking along the creeks. You will need warm layers, water, and good walking/hiking shoes. A partner is recommended, but not required. There is no fee required for this event, just the desire to help keep Prescott beautiful for all who live and play here. Hope to see you at the Cleanup!


Prescott Creeks Outreach Assistant
Prescott College Work Study Internship

Be a Community Leader; become the Outreach Assistant for Prescott Creeks and make a difference in your watershed. This Prescott College work-study position will assist the Prescott Creeks staff with a variety of events and projects including, but not limited to the Granite Creek Cleanup, and Watson Woods restoration. The duties associated with this position will be highly variable and may include project development, data input, public presentations, fundraising, and working with volunteers. The Outreach Assistant will be a highly visible member of the Prescott Creeks staff and will interact with the public on a regular basis. 10 to 20 hours per week.

Granite Creek Watershed Residents' Survey

The Granite Creek Watershed Improvement Council is working to improve watershed health and water quality in our creeks and lakes through a community planning effort. Public comment and participation is a critical part of this planning process.

The Watershed Residents’ Survey is designed to collect citizens’ opinions on local watershed and water quality issues. Information collected through the survey will be used by the Watershed Improvement Council to connect with and involve the community throughout the planning process.

The survey should take
5 to 7 minutes to complete.

2009 Annual Report

Prescott Creeks and community volunteers completed a very visible phase of restoration this year. Granite Creek now winds through the Preserve in natural curves; young willows are shooting up on its banks; new contours and a fresh carpet of native grasses along the channel await flood waters.

Granite Creek Cleanup is back!

Prescott Creeks is pleased to announce that the annual Granite Creek Cleanup is scheduled for Saturday April 18th 2009. The event is scheduled from 8—10:30 a.m. before the Earth Day Celebration in Granite Creek Park.

The Granite Creek Cleanup will start at Granite Creek Park. Participants will meet at the park, where a morning snack, coffee and juice will be available. As a thank you for the effort, all participants will receive a Granite Creek Cleanup t-shirt for helping out!

Prescott Creeks invites you to join us for the ground-breaking celebration of Watson Woods Riparian Preserve’s Restoration Project on Friday, March 20th at 10am.

Over a decade in the making, the project is designed to improve water quality, protect riparian habitat, and provide open space for native wildlife, Prescott residents and visitors alike.  The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ), Arizona Water Protection Fund, the City of Prescott, and the public have all recognized the importance of the project by collectively contributing almost $1.5 million in grants and donations.

AmeriCorps Volunteers fill
Outreach Coordinator and
Field Projects Coordinator Positions

Prescott Creeks is proud to announce that Renee Hoover and Will Waterman have joined the team.

Hoover, an AmeriCorps VISTA – Volunteers In Service To America, receives a living stipend while helping Prescott Creeks grow its volunteer base, among other duties. Waterman, an AmeriCorps National Direct member, receives a similar stipend to lead hands-on projects such as creek restoration, clean-ups and water quality monitoring for Prescott Creeks and the community. An added benefit for both Hoover and Waterman is an education award at the end of their service with AmeriCorps and Prescott Creeks.

MAYOR JACK WILSON TO TOUR WATSON LAKE
STORMWATER PROJECT

22 February 2008

City of Prescott Mayor Jack Wilson, representatives of the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality, and Prescott Creeks staff will review reconstruction underway at the stormwater basin near the intersection of Prescott Lakes Parkway and Sundog Road. This project will protect water quality in Granite Creek & Watson Lake, and bring in more than $200,000 in construction and monitoring work to the community.

With grant funding from the Arizona Water Protection Fund Commission, the Restoration Plan for Watson Woods Riparian Preseve was completed and released in June 2007. Restoration project goals:

  1. Restore and enhance Granite Creek channel function.
  2. Restore and enhance riparian habitats.
  3. Improve water quality.
  4. Educate & include community members in the restoration process.

Increasing groundwater pumping to feed booming development poses a severe threat to the Verde River, threatening not only one of Arizona’s most popular rivers but also water supplies for downstream communities leading American Rivers to list Upper Verde today as America’s #10 most endangered river for 2006.  The annual America’s Most Endangered Rivers report highlights ten rivers facing a major turning point in the coming year, where action by citizens can make a huge difference for both community well-being and river health. Verde is one of the most endangered rivers in U.S.
The Verde River is among the 10 of America's Most Endangered Rivers in the United States, according to a report that American Rivers released today.

The conservation group puts the Verde at No. 10 on its 2006 list. The Grand Canyon Chapter of the Sierra Club nominated the Verde to the list.
